How to Get Your License to Carry (LTC)
The Texas License to Carry application process changed October 1, 2026 with the launch of the state’s new RSD Connect licensing system. Follow the steps below to complete your LTC process.
Step 1: Register for a Class
Choose a class date, create your profile, and pay for your class.
Step 2: Create or Log In to Your TxT Account
To begin your Texas LTC application, you’ll first need to create or log in to your Texas by Texas (TxT) account at TxT.Texas.gov. Once logged in, you’ll be able to access the new RSD Connect licensing system to begin your LTC application.
Step 3: Apply For your license
Access RSD Connect through your TxT account and complete your License to Carry application. Follow the instructions provided during the application process to submit the required information and schedule your fingerprinting.
- State fee: $40 (discounts may apply)
- You’ll need the information requested during the application process.
Step 4: Schedule Fingerprinting
After submitting your application, you’ll be prompted to schedule fingerprints through IdentoGo.
- Cost: $10
- You may be able to schedule this the same day as your class. Same-day appointments are not guaranteed. Defender Outdoors cannot schedule or manage your IdentoGo appointment.
Important:
You do not have to complete your LTC application before your class. Only do this early if you want fingerprints done before or on the same day as your class.
Step 5: Complete Your LTC Class at Defender
Your shooting proficiency is completed before the classroom portion. You must already know how to safely operate and shoot your firearm.
- The LTC class does NOT teach you how to handle a firearm; instead, it covers the legal aspects of carrying a firearm in the state of Texas.
- If you’re not confident, we strongly recommend a Private Lesson or take the Pistol 1 class beforehand. It is dangerous for yourself, your classmates, and our staff for you to enter the shooting proficiency portion of this class with little to no prior firearms knowledge.
Step 6: Your Instructor Submits Your Completion
After you successfully complete the class and shooting proficiency, your instructor will submit your course completion electronically. You will no longer receive a physical LTC-104 from Defender Outdoors to upload yourself.
Already completed your training? Previously issued LTC-104 forms from the past two years can still be uploaded through the new system.
Lost your previous LTC-104?
- Email: training@defenderoutdoors.com to request your copy.
- A $25 document retrieval fee applies for any request to locate and resend your LTC-104, regardless of how long ago your class was completed.
Step 7: Receive Your License
Once DPS has received and processed all required information, you can check the status of your license through RSD Connect. Defender Outdoors cannot check the status of your application. For questions regarding your application or license status, contact Texas DPS directly at (512) 424-7293.
